Portable DiskDigger

Synopsis :

Portable DiskDigger is dead simple to use, and does a good job at recovering the deleted files most users really care about - photos, music, videos, and documents. The preview pane supports most image types and some documents, and you can choose to recover a portion of files DiskDigger finds. Scanning speed and restoration success was on par with Recuva in my testing.

On Vista and Windows 7 make sure you run DiskDigger as an Administrator, otherwise you might run into problems. Though I received an error message after launching it on Vista Ultimate x64, it ran without further problems after clicking continue and did a good job locating and restoring lost files.

How to Run Skype from USB Flash Drive

Skype lets you make cheap or free voice or video calls on computers running Windows, OS X, or Linux. There are even mobile clients available that let you make calls using your smartphone from a WiFi hotspot. But there's no official portable version of Skype that you can run from a USB stick.
It turns out though, that it's pretty trivial to convince Skype for Windows to run properly from a USB stick, which means you can save the program to a flash drive and carry it with you in your pocket. All of your settings and preferences will be saved to the USB stick, so your username, password, and other data won't be stored on your work computer, friend's computer, or other unsecure computer where you use the program.
Here's all you have to do:

1. Download Skype 4.0
2. Install Skype on your PC and then find the installation folder. It's probably something like "C:\Program Files\Skype." Copy the Skype.exe file to a folder on your USB flash drive.
3. In that same folder on your flash drive, create a subfolder called "data."
4. Create a new text file called "Skype.bat" or Skype Portable.bat" or whatever you like.
5. Open your new file using Notepad or another text editor and write "skype.exe /datapath:"data" /removable" (without the quotes).
6. Save and close your file

When you click Skype.bat, Skype should launch and all of your settings will be saved in the data folder. Although these instructions were designed for older versions of Skype and Windows, I just tested them with Wndows 7 an Skype 4.0 and everything works perfectly.

How To Run Linux to USB Device

Getting Linux to run on a USB Drive may easily seem to be an overwhelming process, but we put together a very simple guide that an absolute novice could follow.

1.0 Formatting The USB Storage Device

1.1) Insert your USB Storage Device into an empty USB slot on your PC.

1.2) Download and Install the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. Once the usb disk storage format tool is installed, run it by double clicking its icon on the desktop.

1.3) Use the following settings in the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

• Device: The name and capacity of your storage device
• File system: FAT
• Volume label: Name it what you want (I chose LINUX)
• Confirm the Format by clicking Yes.
• Once the Format is complete it will give you a list of information about the file system, volume, etc. about your device. Click OK.

2.0 Extracting Necessary Files

2.1) Download and Extract the Damn Small Linux distro (dsl-embedded.zip) to your USB device using Win-Zip or any extraction software.

2.2) Download and Extract all the files from syslinux-3.11 to a folder named Syslinux on your primary hard drive (mine is C:)

2.3) Go to the Run Menu (Click Start> Run) and open the Command Prompt by entering cmd and pressing Enter (or Click OK).

2.4) At the Command Prompt type cd c:\syslinux\win32 (substitute c: for the drive letter of your hard drive) and Press Enter

Type syslinux.exe -f F: (F: reprents the drive letter of my USB Device. Yours may be different. GET THIS RIGHT). Press Enter.

Type exit to close the Command Prompt

3.0 Booting to Linux

3.1) Keep your USB Device plugged in and Reboot your PC.
3.2) Enter your BIOS setup (usually by pressing F2 or DEL) and set your Boot order to boot from the USB Device First. Exit your BIOS and Save the Changes. Since there are MANY different BIOS you must figure out on your own if your PC supports booting from USB.

If all goes well you’ll be presented with Damn Small Linux’s Boot Screen. Press Enter and continue the boot process.
