Screamer

While I know it's no big deal to dump a couple of gigs of music onto my 8GB flash drive, sometimes it's nice to fire up some streaming radio for a change of pace.

Screamer is available both as an installable application and as a portable executable. Go with the portable version, and you'll be able to take your presets with you wherever you can plug in your USB flash drive.

Click on presets, and Screamer will bury you under a mountain of radio streams. Browse by genre, geographical location, network, or language. Once you make a selection, its category heading will automatically be added to the bottom of the preset list for easy channel changing.

I tune in The Edge, and Screamer adds the rest of the Modern Rock category for me. Slick.

Favorite your top feeds and Screamer saves them in a simple XML file - handy for emailing your faves to a buddy, if you feel like sharing.

Recording is supported, though only on streams that provide track information. You'll still need an app like StreamRipper for recording other feeds.

Development is very active, and new streams are added frequently. You can request a specific one by visiting their forums. Screamer is freeware, Windows only.

ZuluPad is a notepad on crack. It's a place to jot down class notes, appointments, to-do lists, favorite websites, pretty much anything you can think of. The great thing about ZuluPad application is that it combines the best parts of a notepad with the best parts of a wiki, a concept made popular by Wikipedia. Say for instance, you're a music major, and you're studying Bach.

You've taken notes on Bach in ZuluPad, and after a long 16 weeks have finally completed the semester. Sometime after the summer break, you're taking notes on Beethoven, and your teacher mentions a way in which Beethoven was influenced by Bach.

WikiPad V1.7

WikidPad is a Wiki-like notebook for storing your thoughts, ideas, todo lists, contacts etc. It allows you to easily cross-link the information entered by using "WikiWords".

How to Install in Stick :
Download the installer and extract using Universal Extractor to a folder of your choice. The application files are located in the {app} folder. Launch the program by double-clicking on WikidPad.exe. Under Help | About, scroll the shown text to the end to locate the configuration folder (typically the user profile folder C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]). Now close the program. From the configuration folder, move a file called WikidPad.config and a folder called .WikidPadGlobals to the application folder where WikidPad.exe resides. Launch WikidPad.exe again and it should write settings to the application folder instead of the user profile folder.

Operator

Synopsis :
I'm not a big Opera fan, but I have to say I'm pretty impressed with Operator - a portable version with built-in Tor (hence the semi-clever name) anonymous browsing.

Download the 7mb zip and extract it to your flash drive, and you've got an excellent way to keep your surfing on public and work computers safe and private. I was surprised with the speed at which pages loaded, having used TorPark to cure my insomnia back in the day. Part of the boost comes from integrating Polipo, a tiny caching web proxy that Operator bundles with the browser.
